Dates may be the star of BIGDATE Date Swirls, but the dough matters too. We use whole wheat flour because its nutty flavor and whole-grain character work naturally with dates, walnuts, olive oil and spices.
Whole Wheat and White Flour Are Different
Whole wheat flour contains the bran, germ and endosperm of the wheat kernel. Refined white flour generally has the bran and germ removed. Because of that difference, whole wheat flour typically contains more fiber and retains more of certain naturally occurring nutrients.
Flavor and Texture
Whole wheat brings more than nutrition to BIGDATE. Its deeper, nuttier flavor complements dates and walnuts, while its structure helps create the layered bite that defines a Date Swirl.
Working With Fruit
Banana and dates both contribute moisture and texture to a recipe. Flour choice, ingredient ratios, mixing, rolling, baking and cooling all affect how the finished product holds together. We developed our recipe around the texture and flavor we wanted rather than assuming one flour behaves the same way in every baked product.
What Whole Wheat Does Not Mean
Using whole wheat does not automatically make a snack low-glycemic, guarantee steady blood sugar, prevent overeating or make it appropriate for every diet. Those conclusions depend on the complete food, serving size and the individual eating it.
Why We Chose It
Our ingredient decisions start with the finished experience: Does it taste good? Does it work with the date filling? Does it reflect the kind of food we want to make? Whole wheat earned its place because it contributes flavor, texture and whole-grain character.
